THe Experiment
First thing we did was observe the frog. We looked at the dorsal and ventral sides of the frog and observed the colors of both sides. The dorsal side of our frog was black and it had a few spotting on it and the ventral side was a light nude color. We examined the hind legs and fore legs. There was 5 toes present in the each foot of the hind legs, these toes were webbed and for the forelegs, there 4, these toes were not webbed.
Then, we measured our frog from the tip of the head to the end of the backbone. Our frog was about 8 cm. After measuring our frog, we asked our classmates the measurements of their frogs. The measurements of our classmates frogs came up to be around the same numbers as our frog. |
Next, we had to locate the frogs eyes and use tweezers to remove the nictitaing membrane. The color of the nictitaing membrane was black. Then, we had to locate the tympanic membrane and measure it. It was located just behind the eyes on the frog's head. Diameter of the tympanic membrane was 1 cm. We then, felt the frog's skin. The frogs skin was Slimy.
The next step was to pry the frog's mouth open and use scissors to cut the angles of the frog's jaw open. After opening the mouth, we located the tongue. The tongue of our frog attached to the front of the mouth. After opening up the mouth, we located the esophagus, which is the tube that leads to the stomach. We then located the Eustachian tubes, which are used to equalize pressure in the inner ear while the frog is swimming around. |
Finally, the actual dissection of the frog! So, first thing my partner and i did before cutting up the frog, we placed the frog ventral side up. We then, grabbed our scissors and cut horizontal from the legs to arm. After that, we cut vertical about halfway reaching the head. Then, my partner and i cut another horizontal line at the top. We then lifted the flaps and repeated the steps on cutting till we got to the organs.
Finally, we got to see the organs inside of the frog's body. The organs did not look any different from the organs we have in our bodies. After opening up the ventral, we had to locate all 16 organs and take photos of each of the organs. Then, we had to cut open the stomach and see what the frog last ate. Unfortunately, my partner and i couldn't find anything inside the stomach. After cutting up the stomach, we had to measure the small intestine and once again, measure our frog. Finally, after completing all the instructions, the frog dissection is complete!! |
